Travelling by 4×4 our objective is to experience some of the dramatic coastline of the Moroccan Atlantic, walk on deserted beaches and explore the ancient medina and harbour of Essaouira. Leaving Marrakech we take an off-beat route across country to reach the Atlantic at Souira Kedima, a sleepy coastal town with a lovely beach.

We then turn south to follow the windswept Atlantic coast, broken by areas of dunes, hills, fishing villages and largely protected off-shore by a 50 km long marine reserve (Aires Marines Protégées). We visit a small fishing harbour and follow sand-tracks to a remote beach before continuing to Essaouira.

Next a local guide will take us on a short orientation tour of the medina. The rest of our
time is free to explore the narrow shop-filled streets, the colourful fishing port or beach. En route back to Marrakech we visit an Argan oil co-operative and hope to see tree-climbing goats.

ITINERARY

0800   Rendezvous with driver; drive to Souira Kedima, then south along the
Moroccan Atlantic coast.

1330   Arrive in Essaouira then tour the medina; free time to explore the sites, visit
the beach.

1730   Depart Essaouira.

2000   Arrive Marrakech.
